Ozma writes Tetris on their set lists.

Didn't Dan say they originally called it Korobeiniki so the Russian guy who invented Tetris wouldn't take legal action if he ever found out. I think it was on the old ozmaonline. I am sure Dan wasn't too serious about it though the legal part though, and since the traditional Russian title goes with the whole theme...

gotta love the old guy upfront.

what does that have to do with this thread?

Um... Tetris is a trademarked game that uses the Russian folk song Korobeiniki as a theme. It is so old, it is considered public domain and one is free to record it (Ozma, Tetris game manufacturer) and sell it without repercussions. Calling it "Tetris" would land you in a world of trouble for at least another 60 years.

So, yeah.

I assume, I might be wrong, that Nintendo owns Tetris.  If that's correct, you certainly don't want to screw with them.  A while back, Nintendo sent a cease and desist order to suicidegirls (nsfw) because a member had registered using the screen name "Super Nintendo" and a few other things of that sort, basically amounting to message board discussion almost exactly like this post.  They quickly called off their dogs, admitting that they had made a mistake, but the point remains:  "yikes."  If you put a Nintendo product name on a record that you were commercially selling, you'd probably be fucking yourself pretty hard.

I still call the song "Korobeiniki", because calling it "Tetris" just rubs me the wrong way, regardless of what the band members choose to do.

I'd personally call it Tetris, because the Tetris arrangement is quite different from the original (changed melody I think). Other names are Korobushka and Peddler's Pack...
Unterreiner is tall and surprisingly thin, given that the floor of his closet is stacked high with junk food. Boxes and bags of Doritos, Twinkies and Ho-Hos spill out onto the floor. He has towels around his window to keep out the cold air at night. "I hate this old house," he said bitterly, then changed the name of an unfinished track to "Cold Day."

Additionally, Ozma's version is even altered from the Tetris version.  I've heard the song played in a bunch of different ways, and some of them vary greatly, but I'm not sure what variations are more true to the original and which are not.

I propose we just start refering to it as "That one instrumental song ozma has" to avoid any legal situations.

flight has lyrics
and i would argue that what you hear in landing are not lyrics, but vocal melodies
"A little while and I will be gone from among you, when I cannot tell. From nowhere we came, into nowhere we go. What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset." -- Crowfoot

i called it an instrumental one time and you argued that they were lyrics.

i propose that we call "tetris" "utsikushii shibuya" instead just in case someone from nintendo actually sees that people call it tetris, and we actually just forget about the real "utsikushii shibuya"

Oh yeah, all this talk and I had forgotten to even watch the video.  I just did though, and I thought you did a pretty good job.  All three of you are pretty good musicians.

agreed. I hate seeing young guys that could smoke me on guitar. For that, Ross, I am gonna put a bullet through your chorus pedal. THERE I SAID IT!

me too.  However, I've rarely seen anyone that couldn't smoke me on guitar.  I suck.  Anyway, back to the cover, I enjoyed the drumming.  It seemed more aggressive than I remember the drumming to be in the Ozma version.  Of course I don't have the drum line memorized or anything.

dear ozmafans forum,

i'd like to take this time to appologize for leaving my chorus on the entire duration of this song. i really didnt notice it while performing, and the camera seemed to pick it up quite well. im sorry for any sonic injuries that may have temporarily occured at the will of my foot. thank you.

-Ross

anyway Jason, my drummer always said hes always felt Pat could've been slightly more aggressive with ozma tunes, so i guess that came out of him in this song, but i really like it this way. we had to make up for no rhythm guitar somehow. which basically what my bass player did.

anybody spot the new pretty guitar? pics to follow in equipment thread soon...

Oh, I wasn't complaining.  I liked it the way he played it in your cover.
