My favorite band is The Beatles, followed by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.  So I don't think Ozma would feel too slighted.

in certain respects, yes.  i like so much music though, it's not as though any one band is the end all.

exactly my feelings. I have certain moods. During certain moods (definition of mood in this context is a collective feeling over an extended period of time) I enjoy certain types of music. Sometimes I'm heavy on Ska. Sometimes heavy on grunge/punk. Sometimes I'm heavy on Ozma. Sometimes "anything BUT ____". It's an always moving sort of thing.

I can't say Ozma is my favorite. Because that would imply that they are always my favorite. However, consistently I always enjoy Ozma and would never say "turn it off".

EDIT: For example, today at work (right now) I am in such a mood for Songs of (In)Audible Trucks and Cars it's funny. It's looping around and around... Lorraine, Iceland... mmm... Good coding music.

I used to consider them my favorite band, but I haven't really listened to them in a while.  However, I'm not even sure what favorite band #2 is, and I don't think I would be willing to promote them to #1.

Lately I've been listening to the same shit, but I don't think I would call any of it my favorite.  So just because I dislike change, I'll call Ozma my favorite.  For now, at least.

I have a top 10 of bands, and there really is no set #1.  But Ozma certainly is on the list.  If I'd have to make a list, the 10 would be, in no particular order...

Ozma
Rilo Kiley
Muse
Harvey Danger
Radiohead
Snow Patrol
They Might Be Giants
The Cardigans
REM
The Postal Service

Ozma
Weezer
Nada Surf
Pixies/Frank Black

I weep when I think I'll never go to an Ozma gig.  :'(

Really.

i get really sad too.  as much as i like the albums, the absolute best part of ozma was seeing them live.  usually i don't like live stuff nearly as much as the albums, but they really had something.

Well, see, there is favorite as in music I like absolute most (which changes daily) and favorite as in a band I am passionate and care a great deal for and feel connected to on a lot of levels (musically, lyrically, socially [dude, I met my boyfriend through Ozma])...Ozma is my favorite in that sense.

like most people's tastes....mine have changed over the past 4 years.  All i know is that BECAUSE of Ozma and especially because of the OOF...I've found out about more bands that I can handle...and have grown to LOVE some of them....like for example:  I've been falling in love with Rilo Kiley and now consider them top 3 in the eschlons of Weezer.  I knew about Elliot Smith, but never bothered to listen to him until people on here told me to....and I'm so glad they did cuz Elliot Smith has now become one of my favorite artists (bumping J. Timberlake from my top 5 singer/songwriters).

basically...ozma and this forum has led me to sooo many new things that I can't really claim it ALL as being a "band" anymore.  Ozma has become synonymous, to me, with music, people and even small things like Flash Games.....

I really dunno how to describe it but like that....

I think Ozma was infinitely better live than on the album, and juding from the reaction to the production on STOTB, I think most would agree. Ã, On this note, I am excited to see what Jose does in Yes Dear because he was probably the best member to see live.

Well, now that he will be playing guitar and not drums, chances are it will be more of the Jose we know and love, bouncing around and spreading his energy throughout the crowd.

And yes, Ozma was fantastic live.  I found them at a live show, and their live "Battlescars" has always blown me away.  Substantially better than the R+RPIII version, which is Samuel in its own right.

And "Eponine" was always fun to watch live.  Great stuff indeed, and I'm sure Yes Dear shall follow that tradition quite well.

I sort of have tiers of bands... I have my all-time top two, then a few below that, then a few below that. But within each grouping, there's no particular order of favourites - I'd find it impossible to choose between them. Ozma, however, only make it into the second tier, like so :

Blur
Weezer
(the two that are above all others in my eyes, and probably always will be)

Then the next lot, in which Ozma fall, are (but in no order) :

Ozma
Nada Surf
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
They Might Be Giants
Muse
The Get Up Kids
Rilo Kiley
Radiohead
Ooberman

... and then there are more below that grouping that I'd find it impossible to order. So yes, Ozma are one of my favourite bands, but I doubt they'll ever find the same place in my affections as Blur or Weezer, especially as they're not recording any more.

Not since 2001. I don't listen to them all that much lately. But RRP3 will always hold a ridonkulously special place in my heart, and I still pull it out now and then. Sometimes I get a giddy feeling and think "I'm going to listen to Ozma today when I get home!" I've been meaning to buy the DDD remaster pretty much since it came out. If I had that copy I'd probably listen to that album more often too.

no.  i'd say they were at one time, which was when i joined the original oof, but definitely not anymore.  right now, it would either be muse or pinback.

I didn't realize how many others really dug Muse til now. 8)

they were #3 when I got into them my sophomore year of HS.
#5 junior
around #7-9 senior

these days, every now and then they make the top ten (changes monthly) but not often. :-\

what a tough question

i also have a tier system with my favorite bands

my sophomore year of high school through my senior year, ozma was number one, and the only other bands that made it to the first tier were weezer, rilo kiley, and modest mouse

ozma hasn't fallen from the first tier, but it is getting crowded (cursive, the good life, bright eyes, piebald, radiohead, the long winters, nada surf, etc.)

yes

but it's not all based on their music, as i'm sure a lot of others would agree with when lovin ozma
there's so much more to it that gives them their own special tier in my tier system that floats along the top

Ozma was my favorite band at one point. But my favorite band changes probably about yearly, if not half yearly. Right now I'm stuck on Ted Leo, to the point of obsessiveness. I think Ben Folds is following close behind, and David Crowder behind that. Ozma's somewhere in my top 10.

In no particular order (excluding those already mentioned):

Chris Tomlin
Weezer
Ozma
Switchfoot
P.O.D.
Hillsong United Youth
Radiohead

Yeah, that sounds about right. Over the past 7 years I've been obsessed with one of the above 10 bands for a while.

Fun Fact: The first (band?) I ever got into (way back when I first really got into music at all) was Boys to Men. Bet you didn't need to know that.

If I had to say overall, in lyrics, musical ability, and synergism, what my favorite band was, it'd definitely be OZMA. Now, as with just about everyone on here, my tastes cycle, but OZMA is the single one that shows up recurringly (along with Senses Fail). Weezer comes close, as does Yes Dear. Thrice, Rise Against, Ataris, Fourbanger, Postal Service, Deathcab for Cutie, and a few others are also at the top.

i still enjoy ozma but not nearly as much as say 3 years ago.  my taste for music has changed to more mature stuff i suppose like wolf parade, broken social scene, arcade fire, interpol, my bloody valentine blah blah blah (if you want to argue whatev).  however ozma was always and will continue to be an important band in my life because they really exposed me to bands that werent getting radio play or on major labels but made great music.  plus some of their songs are extremely memorable and bring me to certsain points in my life.  so for those reasons, i will always continue to support ozma by going to their shows, buying their cds, shirts, etc.

I donââ,¬â,,¢t want to pick favorites, but ozma floats around there in the top 5.  Theyââ,¬â,,¢re always the most fun to introduce people to.

One quick questionââ,¬Â¦ how can you tie weezer with ozma?  Weezer has been quite disappointing since the departure of Matt Sharp.  Of course the blue album and pinkerton are untouchable pop perfection, but the last 3 albums have left something to be desired.  2 out 5 isnââ,¬â,,¢t so good.  Ozma is 3 for 3 and Matt Sharp is 3 for 3 (solo and Rentals) and Iââ,¬â,,¢m sure both of their next efforts will exceed the music of make believe.

my top 5 (not in order): Superdrag, Ozma, The Beatles, Rilo Kiley, Death Cab and Nada Surf is on the bubble. (includes all side projects and solo work by afforementioned bands, except for jon davis solo)

Ozma was my first favourite band... I still enjoy their music and they were important for getting me into the music I'm currently into (DB->Ezra->MaeShi->Deerhoof).

Also I still listen to them kinda often, when some of my past favourite bands I pretty much don't listen to (i.e. Rush (shhh)).

Ozma is probably my third favorite... I love them but I'd like to see a bit more experimentation... a lot of the stuff sounds very similar.
Ben Folds would be my second, and although he doesn't experiment too much either, I think he does a bit more, and with piano as well.
The Presidents of the United States of America are by far my favorite band, and most of Chris Ballew's side projects (i.e. The Feelings Hijackers) are tied as well. Those few bands will never be matched, as far as I can see.

Hey I like Weezer too, I think everybody on this board does or at one point in time loved that band.Ã,  No need to get bent out of shape, homie.Ã,  You forgot to mention that stupid band "crazy town", the guys that did "butterfly" on your favorites list.Ã,  Ã, yeah I think cuomo laid down some guitar for one of their songs.Ã,  You could list them right after franz ferdinand, homie.Ã,

k, shut up
just because a Weezer guy did some song doesnt mean I automatically like it its just that
Homie
Rentals
Special Goodness
Space Twins
ARE really good bands
i dont love matt sharps solo stuff
or love cold because Rivers did something with them
nor the Kickovers because mikey is in it

So stop making fun of me

If you try I will give you suuuuch eh peeench

fair enough.  When you say that you have 20+ homie songs, does that count for the Rivers solo stuff in Boston? i.e. rosemary, hot tub, wanda, etc?

Not really.

Granted, I haven't been over to Weezer's site in years, so I don't know what they are playing live these days, but it can't really be good, seeing as how it probably involves more of their last three albums and not enough of the first two.  Now Weezer 5 or 6 years ago, that's a different story.

That' a no brainer. Ozma. Weezer sucks. Now if it was during the Pinkerton tour, I might be inclined to go with the Weezer show, but still.....Ozma is just a better live band. So, yeah.. I take it back. Ozma all the way.

I saw them last summer at Lollapallooza and they were pretty diverse good amount of old songs, although I did have to sit through "Hash Pipe."
That being said I'd still see Ozma.

Ozma
Weezer
Nada Surf
Pixies/Frank Black

I weep when I think I'll never go to an Ozma gig.Ã,  :'(

Really.

weezer was my favorite for a long time just because when i was little i loved them, and at that time they only had two really good cd's.  ever since green i have kinda just said "well, they'll have a good album some day" but they didn't and i then realized that ozma is truly my favorite band.  so for me it goes like this

1.Ozma
2.Nada Surf
3.Led Zeppelin (best band ever, not my favorite though)
4.Coldplay/Beatles
5.Weezer (the first two cd's + b-sides)

had i posted this in 2004, this would be a little different. but it changes for me every couple months. im not really concerned with staying up to date though. for example i still dont like rilo kiley!

right now my favorite bands are spoon, built to spill,Ã,  and the who.....

actually spoon has been up there for a few years. i hope ive contradicted myself enough in this post.

I don't think I've posted in here:

There was a point in time that Ozma WAS in fact my favorite band.Ã,  It was actually a few months after they broke up, and I started looking deeper into them, finding songs I'd never heard, and getting reacquainted with songs I'd long forgotten.Ã,  I first became a "fan" in late 1999 when I started finding mislabeled songs on Napster.
After they broke up, I spent a lot of time longing for them to get back together, and telling myself I would have gone all the way out to California to see them live had I known ahead of time that they were breaking up.

Anyway, I got to do that, and it was awesome, but something else unexpected happened...

I met Satisfaction, and my heart flutters with desire for them.

i would have to say ozma is my favorite band in the sense is they are what i mostly listen to, but i would have to say my all time favorite band and who i believe is the most talented band ever would be The beatles. but i listen to ozma more.

Atleast we have some of the studio recordings, like "Lover In the Snow". Maybe we'll get them when we get SFTB. Didn't Rivers say once he is legally alowed (when his contract with Geffen expires) he will give us everything? As in all the old demos/studio recordings in his catalog?

Oh well, its great we are all on topic.  ::)

not sure Lover in the Snow is a Homie song. I dont know if Rivers' said he would give us EVERYTHING, plus he tends to say one thing, then immediately ignore he said it at all. i personally dont think well see SFtBH entirely released, i think if a box set every occurs, thats when well get some songs, but not all.

Yes I realize Rivers always contradicts himself.

And no, I also doubt there will ever be a boxset, or even an officially released version. I bet we will get more from the internet.

someone just needs to steal SFtBH from Karl and give it to us. argh.

wow. 06 treat has been up for a while now. its a crappy Perfect Situation video. all that "legal" bs for that. once again another massive dissapointment from the Weezer camp. i thought it would at the VERY least be this "unbreak my heart" cover taht rivers loved so much. NOPE. nada. crappy crappy live video. but yea, been up for a few months now.

Yeah shows how much interest I've payed towards whats going on with Weezer lately...

Let's face it, either call it quits and give us all the oldies and rarites we want, or start making some new music already...

Hows the Relationship? I think I heard one of their songs a few months back, but wasn't interested. I never went back to listen again.

i want to like brians side projects, but im just not thrilled about Space Twins, so i havent tried Relationship really.

MB is good. its at least an attempt to sound Blue-ish again. its more of a "super-green album" if u take my meaning. songs like Hold Me, This Is Such a Pity and Freak Me out are my favs. its worth it, especially if u wasted money on the mistake known as Maladroit.

and no, no progress on the live dvd, he says its been delayed by Geffen again. or something. who knows, i think well see this rumored best of before then they say the best of is supposed to include new songs.

maladroit has to be my third favorite weezer album, death and destruction is probably my favorite weezer song that is on an album right now. so no i do not consider maladroit to be a mistake. and as far as mb, those are probably my fav three songs on it too.

maladroit is terrible. the demo seesions were FAR better. and dn'd and burnt jamb should of obviously stayed instrumental. nothing was added by giving them lyrics except more "im so sad" lyrics. if theyd of stayed instru. then we could of said "look, they can do great instrumental songs" instead its jsut cliche weezer ylrics.

ok space rock is good, the guitar solo in love explosion rocks. but u can trash the rest of the album.

Make believe is definitely the best album they've produced since pinkerton, but that says more about their post-pinkerton output than the quality of the album.  I would state to ILO that anyone who likes maladroit is an idiot, but I think his idiot status has been confirmed and re-confirmed several times over and at least once on this very issue.

QuoteI only really like "the other way" out of the songs from make belive.

wow. im the exact opposite. the other way, my best friend [which was intended only for the Shrek 2 s.track.], and damage in your heart are the worst songs on the album, and should of been excluded from the album. my favs are 1. freak me out 2. haunt u everyday 3. hold me 4. this is such a pity.

QuoteMake believe is definitely the best album they've produced since pinkerton, but that says more about their post-pinkerton output than the quality of the album.

totally agree. there obviously not gonna get "great" again, and i dont feel there trying at all, really. if we do get a new album, i hope its years into River's marriage. maybe that will give us great weez music again.

Did you know that some of the sheet music for songs from the black hole are avaible online?
http://www.acrosstheweez.com/media/other/4.html

Therefore some of the unrecorded songs like "getting up and leaving" are covered.
This guy does a good job of it:

Thats a great cover, well let me rephrase that, thats a great song. I guess I can't really say its a great cover when the original version has never been heard by us the public. So great song Jonathon Berry.

Yeah I like how he does it. I imagine the original sounding like it, but more better somehow, more unique in someway.

When I had 10,000 posts on the ozmaonline message board, Ozma was in my top five.

...Now I can't even remember the last time I put on one of their albums.

Things just change a lot I guess?

Sorry, you can go back to your off topic-ness ;P

(And Maladroit is one of the worst albums in the world.)
(I'm also convinced that Weezer hasn't made good music since the green album.)

yea i MIGHT say Ozma is in the my top 10 bands, but no were near top 5. maybe #9.

Quote(I'm also convinced that Weezer hasn't made good music since the green album.)

still baffled as to how ppl say Green is the best of the new Weez, and not Make Believe. the lyrics on Green are so weak and the solos all follow the melodies. how lazy. at least MB has better solos and doesnt have Crab on it.and yes you are correct Maladroit is one of the worst albums this world has ever seen. ha

hmmmmmm.......sorry. the emotion in there songs doesnt feel..........real enough? i guess. kinda, forced. Battlescars for example doesnt feel like its coming from a real place to me, just a place he's imagined. there not devoid of emotion, just not emotion i relate to.
Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?

The emotion that I connect with resides mostly in the double donkey disk. A Very Good Example=Continental Drift, and Maybee in An Alternate Demention.

ok i can see that. i mean Ozma IS in my top 10, but not my fav. Pink Floyd/Radiohead would tie for #1. i guess i'd have to say SToTB is the closest to real emotion that i connect with, in Restart.

I usually prefer ska, first and third wave, so, I guess because I dig Ozma despite the fact that they don't even remotely touch my favorite genre with a ten foot pole, they must be pretty darn good in my book.
Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?
Post by: WhoYouCallinWeez on December 31, 2006, 11:13:49 am
third wave is like MU330, Mustard Plug, Skankin Pickle, Reel Big Fish, right?
Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?
Post by: CT-700 on December 31, 2006, 11:18:53 am
I never knew it was classified into waves. Pretty cool. So first wave would be the classics, and third would be the newest artists?
Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?
Post by: WhoYouCallinWeez on December 31, 2006, 03:26:26 pm
yea, i didnt know that either till recently. is there a 4th wave yet? and i have no idea who would be considered 1st or 2nd wave.

the kids dont like it. no no. the kids dont like it no they dont like it all.

i try and listen to ska, but for some reason i just cant get into it. i dont know why, they just dont appeal to me, i think i would rather listen to punk than ska.

for once i agree with you. i know of some ska groups and i used to LOVE reel big fish, but i was far more into punk. does Less Than Jake fall into the punk or ska catagory? i hear arguments that point either way.

i used to say ska over punk, but not anymore. i think we agree on a lot of things. and i always just called less than jake ska/punk but i guess if i HAD to put into one or the other i'd say ska

I'd say ska because its just fun music, and a little more musically diverse than punk since it draws roots from other genres, like reggae.

to be fair, you probably wouldn't recognize first wave ska as ska at all.  Pre-punk influence, it sounded like what all of us laymen would call reggae; there's only really a slight rhythmic difference between the two (as far as I know).

I knew ska went back to atleast the '70s, but apparently the all-knowing-and-much-vandalized Wikipedia says the genre is from the pre-WWII time period. Before knowing this, the earliest example I knew of was The Specials' hit, "A Message To You Rudy". Even though I've heard that the above mentioned song is also in fact a cover of a '60s song.

isnt ska a form of rock?
Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?
Post by: Elliott on January 01, 2007, 09:25:58 pm
Ska drew music styles from early bop rock and jazz and mixed with island music such as calypso, I think anyways. Around the 50's and 60's mostly I guess. Then out of ska grew reggae.

Title: Re: Is Ozma your favorite band?
Post by: Oh Jeez... on January 01, 2007, 09:27:59 pm
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, didn't ska and rock emerge at about the same time, around the early 50's late 40's? it changed as the world conditions changed, a lot like rock. I think reggae popped up around the late 50's. Reggae reminds me more of the blues and ska, I think, has the same attitude as rock, ever-changing along with the attitudes of culture and adapting to situations around the individual artists. Reggae, concerning the blues, stemming from african origins and usually themed with ideals about coping with bad situations and about close knit community activity, modeled after african tribes, which in my opinion have to do a lot with the Rastafarian beliefs about being stolen and returning to the promised land (Africa) If that makes any sense at all (I'm out of long-winded breath!)
