Title: Pasadena Tabs
Post by: Brent on May 09, 2007, 09:36:25 am
I have tried submitting tabs in the past...but did not have much luck, so I figured I would post the tab here, in anticipation for the albums release in just under a week.  In my opinion, this is the most harmonically interesting tune Ozma has ever put out.  The chord progressions are really cool and dreamy.  I especially like the use of the augmented chord.  Anyways, seeing as there are two layered acoustic guitar tracks, I did my best to condense both parts into one, trying my best to select the most efficient chord voicings.  Enjoy and let me know if you find any fingering question or notice any mistakes, as I did the majority of this quickly this morning without the aid of a guitar.

***note: my apologies for some of the alignment***

Awesome!  I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know how it sounds, but it looks good!  This is the one song I really wanted a tab for, because, a. it's the one that I wanted to play on guitar the most, and b. I have trouble figuring out complex chords by ear.  And sure enough, the first tab for Pasadena I see, here it is!  Thanks man.

You're very welcome.

I just finished my first year of university for a double major in theory and composition/classical guitar performance, so my ears are in prime transcribing mode after a plethora of transcription assignments this past semester.  Though I must say, it was refreshing to transcribe a song that I actually enjoy for a change.

Hey everyone,

Here is another Pasadena tab: "Incarnation Blues".  Right now I just have the chords in there (no solo or leads yet), but when I find some time I will transcribe the solo and lead work.  Anyways, enjoy and let me know if you find any mistakes.

Also, you can play full chords if you are playing acoustic.  G5 becomes G, C5 becomes C, C5/B can become C/B or Cmaj7, A5 becomes A minor, B becomes B minor (except on the end of the verse sometimes in which it modulates to B major)..etc.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Tuned 1/2 Step Down (Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb)

VERSE:

G5                      C5    C5/B      A5                    B5        C5
Knew weââ,¬â,,¢d never stand a  chance we were slave to circumstance

A5                      B5           C5    A5            B5

At the ââ,¬Å"incarnation blues partââ,¬Â, to those of you who want to play full chords, the B minor modulates to a B major (ie. the third is raised by a semi-tone).  However, no change is needed when playing the power chords.

CHORUS:

Cause time moves slowly when youââ,¬â,,¢re alone with no way to be loved

SOLO: (same as verse)

PRE-CHORUS: (instrumental break)

No chords until the bass re-enters in which case the chord is G5

CHORUS 2:

          Bb5             C5     D5               D5/C#          C5                     Eb5  F5
Cause time moves slowly when youââ,¬â,,¢re alone with no way to be loved

VERSE:

G5                      C5     C5/B     A5                     E5        D5
Knew weââ,¬â,,¢d never stand a  chance we were slave to circumstance
G5                       C5           C5/B       A5                         E5      D5
Maybe weââ,¬â,,¢d have seen this through if you were me and I was you
C5                      E5           D5   C5             E5     D5
Out of mind and body too got the incarnation blues
C5                      E5           D5   C5             E5     D5    C5

End on G5

Thanks!  Ya, I'm off school now, so I have plenty of time.  Plus, transcriptions help me keep my ears working.

I am planning on doing a bunch of songs from Pasadena.  I already figured out all the chord progressions to the songs from listening to the songs once or twice, but I am hoping to get into the details like all the cool riffs and leads, but that takes a bit more time to transcribe.  I am planning on doing Straight Flush next and then Motorology, but if there are any tunes you want a tab for just let me know and I can pump out the chords at least.

Take care,
-Brent

Any chance you could do Heartache Vs. Heartbreak? I'm dying to hear a full acoustic version even if I have to play it myself!

i've figured out the basic chord progression for how they play it, but not a way to make it really sound nice on an acoustic yet...though i guess theres really only an unusual chord or two

Hey everyone,

As requested, here is a tab for ââ,¬Å"Heartache vs. Heartbreakââ,¬Â.  Some of the chords are ambiguous as to whether they are major or minor.  For instance, though the C# on the pre-chorus is in fact major (with an E#), the melody contains an E natural.  Also, the A on the verses could be replaced with an Asus2 (as the B would work nicely with the melody).

Here are some possible voicings, though Iââ,¬â,,¢m sure better ones can be made:

C#m x46654
A x02220x or Asus2 x02200
E 022100
B x24442
G# 466544
F# 244322
C# x4312x (x46664 sounds a bit weird as the high E# is quite clashy with the melody)
F#m 244222
Am x02210
Bbdim x1232x

Please let me know if you guys come up with any better harmonic solutions or voicings.

Tuned 1/2 Step Down (Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb)

VERSES/SOLO:

C#m  A          E          F#5
Heartache will get you down but your
C#m A                      E                   B
Body heals once your love has been found
C#m  A         E              G#
Heartbreak is something else when you
C#m        A          E                      B
Just can't cure the pain that you've found

PRE-CHORUS:

F#
And we almost believed it was
C#
Love         yeah, we nearly perceived it as
F#m                         A                   B
Love       you know I     would have sworn it was

CHORUS:

E                   Am         F#m  G#
Love   but my mind and body fail me
E                  Am      F#m     B
Now and my shining armor's rusted
C#m                           F#
Now it could have been love it should have been
A                    Bbdim
Love

From this point, the structure basically repeats.  The verses, pre-choruses and choruses are all the same and the verse progression is played during the solo.

Thanks and take care,
-Brent

I figured this was Ozma related...plus this section of the forum gets more attention, so I'm hoping these tabs can be transferred into the tab section from these posts.

Actually I think that transcription needs a bit of revamping..Those A's are supposed to be minor, and you have the chords over wrong parts.

EDIT: I think I'll just transcribe it, when I get some time.

Firstly, the A's are all notated as A5...meaning they have no third, thus, they are  neither major nor minor...instead they have neutral tonality.  In addition, at the beginning of the post I suggested that you can play full chords instead of the power chords if you wanted to in which case the A5 becomes an A minor (which I mentioned).

Also, the alignment is a constant problem when I post them.  I double checked it on my computer and all the chords are over the right words and places on my screen, but it could be different I guess depending on what browser you are using.

They're minors either way. Electric or acoustic. I can hear the minors in the song. And I dunno, I get annoyed when the whole song lyrics and every single chords isn't there. Ha, I always get anal about transcriptions and end up doing them myself, ha.

Well between the 2nd guitar parts (octaves) and the melody there is a C happening over top of the A5 making it sound minor.  But the rhythm guitar track on the recording is predominantly power chords.

Anyways dude...obviously you are the best transcriber in the world...so I'll leave this album to you.

Thanks for reminding me why I rarely post transcriptions though.

Just re-did that, cause it's a bit cleaner and I think it'd be a little easier for people to understand. It helped me at least, ha.
Stupid forums though for messing up the alignment(I see what you mean). I had to go through and straighten everything.

Oh and for those B-chords being Bm. I'm really not sure about that. I play B, but it sounds okay either way to me. And during the instrumental part, there are chords you can play, but I don't have it all down, they're doing notes there as well, so it's weird, hence me not including it.

my apologies...i guess i was misinterpretting your comments.

but the rhythm tracks (panned to the left ear) sound like palm muted power chords to me.  though i must say, the dense textures of the tunes make it difficult to make out vividly at times.

also, i must say, throughout the course of transcribing some of these tunes i have really grown an appreciation for how well composed and put together this album is.  the arrangements are spectacular not to mention how harmonically complex this stuff is for pop music.  by far the best ozma album yet in everyway in my opinion.

Yeah, it's funny how much harder this album is to transcribe, than say, RRP3/DDD.

Regarding alignment: When I put things in the Tabs section, I wrap everything in [ tt ] [ / tt ] (no spaces) which keeps it in Courier New font. That keeps the alignment proper if you did it in Notepad.

Everything I've seen so far is in the Tablature section. If you have something that's not in there, please PM it to me.

Since hipsun graciously donated the Barriers tab, I tabbed out the solo to go with it. Its just the basic guitar part. I'll leave to you guys to find out all the other guitar/synth harmonies.  :)

Barriers solo

tabbed by Vincent Poprocky/CT-700

Eb Tuning

I've broken it into 4 segments considering there are four distinct parts.
This is the basic guitar part, no harmonies. Its sounds to be how Ryen plays it live.

A                 Ab                     B                      G
lie detector's on the blink, so comfort me with doublethink
     F#m                      B                     Em
and let's put wallpaper up between our ears
               C                  Em                      C
over the years as my attention span disappears
                    D
blink and it's gone
                       G                       C
a moment has never seemed so long

D
i'm still dreaming of clock towers and synchronicity
      Bm       A            Bm
you call it coincidence --    i call it common sense
D                                                                         A    F#m-G-A
the truth will set you free if you've been slave to a lie

D                         A             G         D
i'm waiting for a chance to make it known
                          A                     G                     D
i'm gonna be the one who keeps you from being alone
          F#m            G
i call, i call, i call, i call
E
no one ever

A                 Ab             B                      G
used to be political, but now our state is critical
    F#m                     B                     Em
so let's put wallpaper up between our ears
                   C                Em                    C
once it was clear maybe i lost it over the years
                 D                   G                     C
maybe it's here buried beneath the dirt of fear
                       A   C
maybe it's still here   (3x)

D
i'm still dreaming of clock towers and synchronicity
       Bm      A            Bm
you call it coincidence --    i call it common sense
D                                                                         A    F#m-G-A
the truth will set you free if you've been slave to a lie

D
i'm still dreaming in sound waves that oscillate and amplify
      Bm          A               Bm
the feeling of nothingness,      oh what a subtle bliss
D                                                                       A    F#m-G-A
the truth will set you free if you've been slave to a lie

D                         A            G          D
i'm waiting for a chance to make it known
                          A                     G                     D
i'm gonna be the one who keeps you from being alone
                         A             G         F#m
i've seen it all before, but i still can't tell
            Em                                   D
so you better ask somebody who knows

D                           A            G          D
i'm waiting for a chance to make it known
                          A                     G                     D
